At Bracknell Plumbing & Heating, we know there’s nothing worse than waking up to a cold home and no hot water because your boiler’s stopped working. That’s why our Gas Safe registered engineers are available 24/7 to get things back up and running with fast, reliable boiler repairs.
There’s never a good time for your boiler to stop working – but when it won’t ignite at all, it can feel particularly stressful, especially during the colder months. Before you panic, the good news is that there are several common reasons why a boiler fails to ignite, and some of them are surprisingly easy to identify. Here’s what to check first, and when it’s time to call in a professional.

1. Check Your Gas Supply
This might sound obvious, but it’s the first place to start. If there’s no gas reaching your boiler, it simply won’t ignite. Check whether other gas appliances in your home – such as your hob or gas fire – are working normally. If they’re not, contact your gas supplier, as there may be a supply issue in your area. If your other appliances are fine but your boiler still won’t fire up, the problem is likely specific to your boiler.
2. Low or No Boiler Pressure
Most modern combi boilers need to operate at a pressure of around 1 to 1.5 bar. If your pressure gauge is sitting below 1 bar, your boiler may refuse to ignite as a safety precaution. You can usually repressurise your boiler yourself using the filling loop – your boiler’s manual will guide you through this – but if the pressure keeps dropping, it’s a sign of a deeper issue such as a leak in the system.
3. A Faulty Ignition Lead or Electrode
The ignition electrode creates the spark that lights the gas inside your boiler. Over time, these components can wear out, crack, or become dirty, preventing the spark from forming. This is not something you should attempt to fix yourself – it requires a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect and replace safely.
4. The Flame Sensor (Thermocouple) Has Failed
Your boiler has a safety device called a thermocouple or flame sensor that detects whether the pilot light or burner flame is present. If this sensor is faulty or covered in residue, it may incorrectly signal that there’s no flame and shut the boiler down. A replacement thermocouple is a relatively straightforward repair for a qualified engineer.
5. A Blocked or Frozen Condensate Pipe
Condensing boilers – which is the vast majority of modern boilers – have a condensate pipe that carries acidic water away from the unit, usually to an outside drain. In cold weather, this pipe can freeze solid, causing the boiler to lock out and refuse to ignite. You can often thaw a frozen condensate pipe yourself by carefully pouring warm (not boiling) water along the pipe. Once thawed, reset your boiler and it should fire up again.
6. Your Boiler Has Locked Out
Many boilers will enter a “lockout” mode after a failed ignition attempt – this is a built-in safety feature. You may simply need to press the reset button on your boiler. If it fires up and runs normally, great. But if it keeps locking out repeatedly, don’t keep hitting reset. This is a sign that something underlying needs attention from an engineer.
7. Issues with the Gas Valve
The gas valve controls the flow of gas into the burner. If it’s faulty or stuck, gas won’t reach the ignition point and your boiler won’t light. This is strictly a job for a Gas Safe registered professional – never attempt to adjust or repair a gas valve yourself.
8. PCB or Control Board Failure
The printed circuit board (PCB) is essentially your boiler’s brain. If it fails, it can affect any number of functions – including ignition. PCB faults are more complex and costly to repair, and in older boilers, it may make more financial sense to consider a new boiler installation rather than investing in an expensive repair.
When to Call a Professional
If you’ve checked the basics – gas supply, boiler pressure, and a frozen condensate pipe – and your boiler still won’t ignite, it’s time to call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Attempting to investigate gas components yourself is dangerous and illegal. At Bracknell Plumbing & Heating, our engineers are available 24 hours a day for boiler repairs across Berkshire and Surrey.
Could It Be Time for a New Boiler?
If your boiler is over 10–12 years old and repeatedly failing to ignite, repairs can start to add up quickly. A new A-rated condensing boiler will be far more reliable, significantly more energy efficient, and could save you money on your heating bills in the long run.
